Explore Victoria: The Gorge Waterway
The Gorge is a favorite place for a stroll to the great combination of trails, carefully manicured gardens and water views. While the river is the obvious destination, the greenway of parks and trails along the Gorge and nearby Colquitz River make longer explorations a worthwhile possibility. The map shows how they all interlink.
The Gorge is a tidal river that connects Portage Inlet with Victoria Harbour. The rapids at Tillicum Narrows can be viewed from the pretty walkways that parallel the waterfront at Gorge and Kinsman Gorge parks; most of the rest of the Gorge will appear as placid as any slow-moving river. From the rapids you can cycle or walk along Dysart Road to Cuthbert Holmes Park, which protects the mouth of Colquitz River in the setting of a mature forest.
Cuthbert Holmes Park follows Colquitz River through Hyacinth and Panama Hill parks. A few street connections are necessary to complete a trail that includes Copley, Brydon, Layritz and Quickâs Bottom parks and ultimately Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary. The 122-metre peak at Christmas Hill offers views over the area.
